In 2007 a record of 2.6 million cubic metres of wood were felled in
Denmark's forests. Despite of record level fellings, the quantity is
only half of the biological annual growth of 5 million cubic metres.
The felling exceeds the previous record from 2006 with 9 %.
The
consumption of softwood in wooden industries was on record level in
2007 as well: 1.3 million cubic metres used, contributed to the
increased felling. However, it is surprising that the production of
firewood and other wood for energy production has decreased somewhat
from 2006.
As only 50 % of the annual growth is used, there are opportunities to
increase the sustainable use of wood from Danish forests in the future.
By increasing the use of wood, forests and wood products can contribute
more strongly to the battle against climate change and improve the
chances of reaching Denmark's CO2 target.
The Danish Forest Association welcomes the lively business in the
forestry sector and the increased deliveries to the wood industry.
However, the Association requires further initiatives and measures by
the Government for promoting the use of CO2 neutral wood for energy
production purposes.
At present forests provide 1/3 of Danish total energy production. That is more than sun, wind and geothermal energy together.
